Plan, Execute, and Fail? The Impact of the Team Your Surround Yourself With

You did it all correctly. You understood why you needed to act. You set a clear and unambiguous goal. You outlined the tasks that needed to be accomplished to achieve your goal. You decided who was in charge of each task and when they should be completed. You set a regular standing meeting for updates. You accounted for some things that might go wrong.

You made your plan before you acted, and then you executed on each aspect of your plan. This is the recipe for success, and you followed it…great things to come!

And Then There Was Failure.

How Does This Happen?

Unfortunately, failure occasionally happens even when you do the things correctly that leaders need to do to achieve mission accomplishment. So where to look for answers when you plan properly and execute, but still fail?

The Leader 193 Way is a leadership process that allows you to determine where things went right and where things went wrong. But we are not going to go through each element of the Leader193 Way to answer this question. Instead, I’m going to give you a place to look that will likely answer why you met with failure after you went through the painstaking, but necessary process of planning.

First, putting the right person in charge of identified tasks is important. But it is not as important as not having the wrong person in charge of identified tasks. In other words, we cannot always get the best person, we just cannot have the wrong person.

Who is the wrong person? The person that does not share your behavioral values. Even someone that lacks some “widget” competency can be trusted to find a way to get the job done as long as they value the right behaviors.

For example:

“I don’t know how to accomplish this task assigned to me so I will point fingers and assign blame to others.”

Versus:

“I don’t know how to accomplish this task so I will research to learn on my own and ask questions along the way, but I will not make excuses for myself.”

The question you must ask yourself as a leader is what behaviors you stand for and have you surrounded yourself with like minded people? You will not get it exactly right every time when it comes to who to surround yourself with.

You just cannot get it exactly wrong.
